Indio Maíz and Bartola: conservation near El Castillo
The Indio Maíz–Bartola area is linked in the NTG guide with El Castillo and the protected forest landscape of Río San Juan. Access must be coordinated carefully because conservation rules restrict where visitors may go.
What you can experience
Choose a nature outing only when a local operator can confirm a permitted itinerary and appropriate guide. The experience may require additional river transport and should not be treated as a walk directly out of the village.
How to plan access
Plan travel to El Castillo, then confirm any further boat connection to Bartola or an authorised starting point. Ask explicitly about permits, guide requirements, return arrangements and included services.
Before you go
Follow all conservation instructions, stay on permitted routes and avoid disturbing wildlife or sensitive habitats. Do not infer opening conditions or boat availability from old travel accounts.
